Boeing Flight network

Role: Lead Designer working with partner product manager and client facing program managers.

THE CHALLENGE

Create an ecosystem within the commercial aviation industry to support minority pilots.

Boeing and other community partners were looking for a solution to support their initiative to increase the amount of black, women, and other minority pilots. In our initial studies and research, we were able to identify the fastest way to scale this up is to work with other aviation companies as well as directly with seasoned pilots willing to mentor new flight students.

Specialized flexibility for targeted growth

Our goal for the project was to make it as easy as possible to create highly customizable forms and flight calendars to enable minority pilots while reducing effort for aviation companies.

Our high level goals were to:

ONE

Make it fast and easy to create forms and fill them

TWO

Give pilots control over their availability and requirements

THREE

Create a platform for complete white-labeling so partners are encouraged to promote internally and externally

Uncovering Challenges and Solutions

With a tight deadline and multiple parties involved, research was handled in a truly agile fashion. Initially stakeholders were able to act as proxies and relay information from internal users (pilots, students, program management) and survey desired features as well as challenges in current protocol., Our UX team was able to request more information on individualized goals and create proposed workflows.

Understanding that users would have different goals and would have different entry points based on which company or organization they were involved with, helped create a system that would flow well across different sites, devices and experiences.

Uncovering Challenges and Solutions

Working through the concept’s we were able to identify some key concerns and challenges for all user types.

Challenges

  1. Responsive system and mobile optimized e-signature solution
  2. Completely scalable solution with unlimited custom fields, section, and embeddable widgets
  3. Easily add shorter flights and customize schedules easily. Instant notifications to communicate changes.

Solutions

  1. No working desktop computer or printer readily available
  2. Multiple Companies with different internal processes for supporting training initiatives
  3. Typical schedules for pilots are very full, difficult to commit a large block of time due to frequently changing work schedules

Intelligent Forms optimized for devices

We were able to gauge the different robust requirements that each aviation partner had tied directly with internal programs. The solution was to create intelligent forms with logic and flexibility.

We created embeddable open shift widgets to be embedded onto partners websites to improve partner buy-in.

Increased community support

Through detailed workflows and validations through usability testing, our team was able to create a system that creates business value by more efficiently supporting the community at large.
